FOCUS AREAS

Beyond whatever we offer in the way of conferences, lectures or seminars in any given semester, New College Madison is part of a larger conversation in our society of certain “problem areas” which need to be addressed if our society is to survive and flourish. Some (though not all) of these “problem areas” are outlined below, and will give you some idea of our programming in future years.

ethics.” Why has this narrowing of meaning happened, and how can the larger meaning of the term be renewed? If we are to maintain democratic control over bioethics, it would seem that citizens need to develop an accurate and profound bioethical consciousness. How might such a consciousness be developed and maintained in the midst of the powerful scientific, technical and economic forces pushing the development of biotechnology?
